How To Cook A Steak On The Stovetop

Cooking a steak on the stove top requires perfect timing and heat control to achieve a flavourful crust and juicy interior. Start with a hot pan, season generously, and sear each side to perfection.

If you are looking for a way to enjoy steak in the cooler months without using an outdoor grill- have is your guide to the perfect steak cooked on a stovetop!

What You Need to Cook Steak On Stove Top:
Cooking a steak on a stovetop requires the right equipment to help you cook a perfect steak every time. You will need:
● Cast-iron skillet for even heat
● Tongs for easy flipping
● Meat thermometer for accurate doneness
● Oil with a high smoke point (e.g., grass fed butter, avocado oil)
● Seasoning (salt, pepper, etc.)
How to Choose The Right Pan for Stovetop Cooking?
We think that cast iron cooking is the best way to create the perfect sear on your steak while being indoors. We love the cast iron pans at Capital BBQ!
Choosing cast iron will ensure an evenly distributed high heat, a natural non-stick surface and a pan that when properly cleaned, will last a lifetime.
How To Cook A Steak On The Stovetop Using Cast Iron:
1.Thaw your steak completely before cooking. We recommend thawing in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. Once thawed, remove your steak from the refrigerator approximately 30–40 minutes before cooking to allow the steak to come to room temperature.
2. Pat your steak dry with a paper towel to remove any moisture and season with salt and pepper. Chef Tip: A quality AAA dry aged steak  requires little seasoning outside of quality salt because of the depth of flavour developed in the dry aging process.
3. Heat your cast iron skillet and add a high temperature cooking oil with butter.
4. Cook your steak for about 4-5 minutes per side for a medium-rare doneness, or use our steak temperature guide if you prefer a different cook.
5. Let the steak rest 5-10 minutes on a plate or cutting board before slicing.

Our favourite steak cuts for indoor stovetop cooking are:
